Alternative Energy For The Home.
July 5th, 2010 at 6:15Do you feel like hiding whenever you get your power bill? If so, you’re not the only one. Many people feel that way, partly because the bill seems to go up with each new one.
With the current cost of energy, increasing numbers of home owners are looking into alternative energy sources for their home’s power needs. Throw in concerns about the environment, pollution, dwindling supplies of raw materials, reliance on giant oil corporations and utility monopolies and it’s easy to see why more and more people are becoming interested in powering their homes by alternative energy sources.
Meeting all of one’s home’s energy needs by installing alternative energy technology such as solar panels or wind turbines, is sometimes referred to as microgeneration. Remi Wilkinson is a Senior Analyst with Carbon Free. She’s predicted that it will become to home energy supply what the Internet became to home communications and data gathering, and eventually this will have deep effects on the businesses of the existing energy supply companies.
But, most importantly, it means tremendous opportunities for householders, especially home owners, to save huge amounts on our energy bills. In many cases we can eliminate them entirely, or even get paid for supplying energy to the grid if we can produce an excess.
So, what are the options for powering your home with alternative energy sources?
When we talk about home installations, the most common and best recognised are:
1. Solar. This works when the sun’s rays are trapped in solar cells. The
process turns the heat from the sun into electricity. When the sun’s rays hit solar thermal panels, the power is then converted to heat air or water. This process can produce steam by heating the water.
To date, the main disadvantage of using this source is that it is limited.
Obviously you can’t use it at night-time and during days when it is raining or overcast. In these situations, people would still need to draw power from the grid, but they can still substantially reduce their overall costs in the long term.
2. Wind. The energy coming from the wind rotates the blades of the wind turbines, which in turn rotates an electrical generator, which produces electricity.
Now there are large scale wind farms that produce large volumes of electricity which is then distributed to national electrical grids. At the other end of the scale are smaller turbines owned by individuals to provide electricity to individual homes.
There are many advantages of these kinds of power. The main one being that they don’t produce any by-products that are harmful to the environment or to people. And we’ll never run out of the raw materials with these energy sources.
